Alkaline Water and Sodium Bicarbonate Additives

• Types of Alkaline Water:
• Natural alkaline water acquires its high pH from flowing through rocks and absorbing naturally occurring minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
• Artificial or engineered alkaline water is typically produced through water ionizers (electrolysis) or by adding minerals and alkaline agents.

• Use of Sodium Bicarbonate:
• Many commercial bottled alkaline waters or home treatment methods do use additives to raise the pH.
• Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), along with potassium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate, and magnesium carbonate, are common additives used to artificially increase alkalinity.

• Health and Physiological Considerations:
• The addition of sodium bicarbonate introduces significant amounts of sodium into the water, which must be monitored by individuals with hypertension, kidney disease, or those on sodium-restricted diets.
• Artificially altering water pH with chemical buffers like sodium bicarbonate does not necessarily equate to superior cellular nutrition compared to naturally mineralized water.
